Acne Myths
Acne myths is a fact of life. No matter how false they are, people will continue to believe in them. Acne myths get passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. They may seem logical at first but by understanding how the body works reveals their “un-truths”. Here is the list of acne myths. Some may sound similar to you:
Acne Myths #1: Poor hygiene is a cause of acne
At first, this may sound logical. By washing your body frequently, you are keeping your skin clean, right? The oil and dead cells which are the main cause of acne are located beneath the skin’s surface. So no amount of washing will get rid of the oil and dead cells. The constant cleaning may actually irritate the skin and worsen the acne condition. Frequent washing will also remove the protective hydrolipidic film layer which in turn will trigger the sebum production (acne causing ingredient). Proper hygiene by itself will not treat the acne, but it can help to reduce it when used with the proper acne treatment. It can make your face less oily but it is only treating your face topically, that is at the surface level. After washing your face, dry it by patting it with a towel instead of scrubbing it.
Acne Myths #2: Eating certain food can cause acne
You must have heard of these two famous myths. Eating chocolates will give you pimples. Eating greasy foods will give you zits. Now, some people have noticed that they do experience a breakout after eating chocolate or drinking too much caffeine, but this is due their body sensitivity to chocolate or caffeine. In these cases, they should abstain from eating these types of food. If you do notice that your acne worsens after eating certain food, then stop eating them and see if it helps. Now don’t go crazy and eat all kind of junk food. Maintain a proper balanced diet for your health.
Acne Myths #3: Stress causes acne
Stress does not directly causes acne. Some stress may cause the body to produce a hormone called cortisol which in turn causes your body to increase excess sebum oil which will block your pores and that leads to acne. Some medication that is used to treat stress can actually produce acne. Check your medication as it will list acne as possible side effect.
Acne Myths #4: Leave the acne alone. It will go away by itself.
Left alone, acne can worsen and leave scars. Acne requires treatment to properly get rid of it. Many products exixts out there today to treat acne. See our home page to see a list of the top acne products that we have compiled for you. Not all acne cases will react the same way to these products as each individual’s acne case is different. You need to try them and find the one that best works for you and then stick with it. You should consult a dermatologist for severe acne treatments.
Acne Myths #5: Tanning will clear the acne.
Tanning (tanning bed or suntanning) only masks or covers the acne. It does not get rid of the acne. Worse, the tanning will actually dry out and irritate the skin thus making the acne worse and may cause additional breakout. Avoid tanning as it can lead to something more worse than acne and that is cancer.
Acne Myths #6: Picking at the zits will speed up the healing process
Popping the zits wil actually lengthen the time for healing. When the zit is popped, the bacteria inside the zit is pushed deeper into the skin thus causing more infection. They may also lead to scarring.
Acne Myths #7: Only Teenagers get acne.
Acne Myths #8: Sweating cleans out your pores
Performing strenuous activitities can increase your body’s sebum oil production that will worsen the acne problem areas.
