Acne Rosacea
Product Information
Is Acne Rosacea Like Acne Vulgaris?
What is acne rosacea? Is it the same as the common acne (also called acne vulgaris)? Many people treat rosacea like acne. They are 2 different things. Rosacea is in the same family as acne, but unlike acne vulgaris, it is not caused by over-production of sebum and blockage of skin pores. Acne rosacea has a red complexion and appears on the nose and cheeks. The skin is dry and flaky. Rosacea, also known as adult acne, appears mainly in fair skinned adults between the ages of 30 and 50 (more women than men are inflicted) whereas acne vulgaris appears mainly in teenagers. For menwho are afflicted, the condition is more severe. Acne vulgaris usually goes away after the teen years. Rosacea, on the other hand, can last forever. Like acne vulgaris, people suffering from Rosacea will be self-concious, embarrassed, withdrawn, and psychologically impacted.
The main symptoms of Rosacea are:
– a tingling sensation
– redness on the forehead, cheeks and chin (see photo). It looks like you are blushing or have a flushed face.
– pimples, papules or pustules appearance on the face. This is why Rosacea is sometimes mistakened for acne
– appearance of thin visible blood vessels under the skin
– skin on the nose area feels thick, especially for men. If left untreated, the nose will have a bulbous appearance. The late famous actor, W.C Fields was afflicted by Rosacea. He was known for his large bulbous nose. This condition is also called rhinophyma.
– watery, irritated, bloodshot eyes (called ocular rosacea).
Causes of Acne Rosacea
It’s not really known what the exact cause of rosacea, but there are certain conditions that act as catalysts. These are being exposed to extreme temperatures, alcohol, hot drinks, exfoliators, abrasive towels, being in hot areas (saunas, taking hot showers, hot baths, steam rooms), perfumed enhanced cosmetics, spicy food.
Acne Rosacea Treatments
There is really no cure for this condition other than controlling it. One needs to stay hydrated and drink cool water. Keep notes on what you do and eat to help determine the cause of your acne rosacea. As always, check with your dermatologist for prescriptions to help control the redness and inflammation. Other forms of treatments are steroids, laser treatments, antibiotics and of course a change in one’s lifestyle.
Some famous people suffering from rosacea includes Bill Clinton, Boris Yeltsin, the late Princess Diana, Rosie O’Donnell, Mariah Carey, William Shatner and W.C. Fields.
