Adult Acne Treatments – Yes Even Adults Can Get Acne

Adult Acne Treatments

Adult Acne Treatments

Why is there a need for adult acne treatments? There is a misconception that acne occurs only in teenagers.  Well, adults can also get acne (whether they had acne or not during their teen years) but under different circumstances.  Adult acne treatments may sometime be different to those for teenagers.  Studies have shown that approximately 40% of acne products purchased in North America are for adult acne. In this article, we look at adult acne treatments.

Causes of Adult Acne

* Stress – In addition to family and career stress, adults now need to contend with unsightly facial acne.  Women tend to become more stressful than men, they are also the greatest in numbers suffering from acne. Stress is the number one cause of acne flare ups in adults.

* Just like teenagers, adults also go through hormonal changes.  For women going through pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause, this also causes changes in their hormonal balances.

* Clogged pores with body oil (Sebum) and dead skin cells.

* During the ages of 40s and 50s, you are now faced with wrinkles.  So to smooth out your wrinkles, you apply moisturizers. For female (and some men), you may be applying more cosmetic to hide the wrinkled skin due to aging. This in turn can clog your pores thus leading to acne.

* Taking medications such as anabolic steroids, lithium, anti-tuberculosis drugs (rifampin, isoniazid), anti-epileptic drugs and medications containing iodine, can cause acne.  Check with your doctor to see whether any medications you are taking can lead to acne.

* If you work with chemicals such as chlorinated solvents, they can cause acne called chloracne.

* Pressure against the skin such as wearing tight fitting clothes (latex).

List of Adult Acne Treatments

* Have your healthcare provider check the hormonal levels in your body to determine whether this is the cause of your acne.

* Drink water to flush away acne causing toxins. By keeping the skin hydrated this will allow the skin to heal faster and better.  This is by far the best and simplest adult acne treatments to apply.

* Learn to become less stressful.  Take a few deep breaths throughout the day. Exercise such as going out for a walk during lunchtime.

* Look for products containing Benzoyl Peroxide.  While Benzoyl peroxide is the leading ingredient in treating acne,  it can be harsh for sensitive skin.  Other ingredients to look out for includes salicylic acid, triclosan, chlorhexidine gluconate.  As these are chemicals and may have side effects, please consult your dermatologist. We recommmend adult acne treatments that contain natural ingredients as they have no side effects. Check out our recommended top acne products

* Natural remedies: Burdock, Dandelion, Strawberry Leaves, Turmeric, Lavender, and Dock Root.

* Take supplements containing anti-oxidants, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, tetracylines, erythromycin, bioperine, hydrolyzed collagen, aloe vera.  These help to work from within the body to strengthen the skin.

* Avoid using oil-based make-up. Use noncomedogenic cosmetic products that do not clog up your pores.

* Steaming your face removes the waxy buildups and stimulates blood circulation. It also helps to clean the pores.  You can also wash your face with luke-warm water (no soap, you can add lemon juice).

* Change your eating habits to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

* Accutane (Isotrtinoin) is highly effective in treating severe adult acne.  PLEASE NOTE: Care must be taken when using Accutane.  It should not be used by pregnant women as it can cause birth defects.  Accutane should be the last resort when all other adult acne treatments has been exhausted.  Accutane is available through prescription so you must seek out a dermatologist.  When using Accutane, all other forms of adult acne treatments should be stopped.
